How to Store and Display Cakes Like a Pro

Cake display cabinet filled with traybakes, brownies, blondies, muffins and pastries, showing variety and quality from a professional cake supplier.

Great cake deserves great care, because even the most delicious bake won’t shine if it’s stored badly, sliced wonkily, or tucked away at the back of the shelf.

At Cake Club, we’ve worked with hundreds of independent coffee shops, and one thing is clear: how you store and display your cakes can make all the difference, to shelf life, presentation, and sales.

So here’s our straight-to-the-point guide to cake logistics, storage, and display – the Cake Club way.

1. Start cold: why frozen is your best friend

All Cake Club bakes arrive frozen fresh.

Freezing locks in flavour, texture, and freshness, while giving you total control over when each cake hits the counter. No rushing, no waste, no “we should’ve sold that yesterday” regrets.

Top tip:

This gives you flexibility to:

  • Defrost only what you need
  • Keep your counter fresh every day
  • Reduce waste

2. Defrost & portion with purpose

The secret to stress-free cake service?

Knowing exactly what you need, when you need it.

When you’re ready to serve, remove from the freezer and use a sharp knife through the pre-cut slice marks. Take the portions you need for the day and allow them to defrost at room temperature. Most bakes will be ready to consume within 2 hours.

3. Display is everything

Cake sells with the eyes first.

For best results, display cakes at room temperature and under cake domes or inside patisserie-style display cases.

Both help protect freshness while showing off the bake properly. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, they’re cake’s worst enemy.

Little details that make a big difference

  • Keep slices evenly spaced (less clutter = more premium)
  • Use flavour tags or small signs, a great name does half the selling
  • Place one hero bake near the till for impulse grabs
Don’t let your cakes be the best-kept secret

4. Match the bake to the moment

Different cakes shine at different times of day.

From what we’ve seen:

morning

A Lemon and Apple Muffin broken in half on a green tray showing the delicious filling with another muffin in the background.

Muffins, citrus bakes & lighter slices

afternoon

A succulent slice of Cake Club's Red Velvet Brownie on a spotted plate next to a spotty coffee cup on a claret and light blue background.

Brownies, blondies & traycakes

seasonals

Chocolate praline pumpkin traycake with cream cheese icing and sprinkles – cakes for coffee shops UK.

Spiced, chocolatey and indulgent bakes perfect for winter

Rotating your display slightly through the day keeps things feeling fresh and gives regulars something new to spot.

5. Keep cakes fresh overnight

At the end of the day, a little care goes a long way.

Best practice (and why it works)

cover cakes well

choose the right temperature

avoid over-chilling

mind the airflow

Covering cakes well: Exposure to air is the fastest way to stale a cake. Covers help retain moisture and protect delicate toppings and icings.

Choosing the right temperature: Most sponge-based cakes stay fresher at room temperature, while cream cheese–topped or more delicate bakes benefit from a chilled display. Sudden temperature swings are what cause condensation and texture loss, so consistency is key.

Avoiding over-chilling: Most sponge-based cakes stay fresher at room temperature, while cream cheese–topped or more delicate bakes benefit from a chilled display. Sudden temperature swings are what cause condensation and texture loss, so consistency is key.

Minding the airflow: Open displays, fans, or vents can pull moisture straight out of a cake overnight. A dome or case helps create a stable microclimate that keeps cakes looking and tasting their best.

A well-covered cake retains its moisture, structure, and shine, meaning it’ll still look counter-ready the next morning, not ‘end-of-day yesterday’.

6. The big picture – make your counter work for you

When storage and display are done right, cake can do a lot of the heavy lifting in your coffee shop.

It should:

  • Look inviting
  • Stay fresh
  • Be easy to manage
  • Sell itself (almost)

That’s why Cake Club bakes are designed to be chef-crafted, pre-cut, flexible, and easy on the eye, because coffee shop life is busy enough already.

If you ever need advice, ideas, or help choosing the right bakes for your counter, you know where we are. Good coffee deserves great cake. Always.
